Three get 14 years\\\' jail for throwing acid at housewife in Bagerhat

KHULNA, Aug 25: Acid violence Control Tribunal of Bagerhat Judge SM Solaiman on Sunday sentenced 3 people to 14 years' imprisonment each in an acid throwing case on a housewife in Bagerhat.

The judge also fined the convicts Tk. 50,000 each and, in default, to suffer three years more in jail. The court also orders to take measure against the three concerned police officers for negligence in their duty.

At the same time the court also ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Bagerhat to sell out through auction all the land properties of the convicts to pay the victim.   

The convicts are Masud Rana (32), son of Abdus Salam Molla of village Maitkumra, Mostafa Uchtha (34), son of Jabbar Uchtha of the same village and Hannan Sheikh (34), of Mokbul Sheikh of village Piljang under Fakirhat Upazila of Bagerhat district.  

According to the prosecution, the convicts had been engaged in teasing a housewife Rowshanara  Sumi, wife of Zakir Hossain of Town Nowapara for long time. On the night of November 09, 2010 the convicts went to the house of victim and tried to abduct her. At one stage, when she screamed the convicts threw acid on her and went away. Sumi filed a case against them on November-11 with Fakirhat thana.

Judge SM Soliman, after examining the records and witnesses, found the  accused guilty and handed down the punishment.
