Thrust on applying modern methods to boost farm yield


SYLHET, May 28: Agriculture scientists, farmers and officials at a regional workshop in the district on Sunday laid emphasis on raising farm production through increasing the use of quality seeds, applying modern method and improving irrigation facilities.
If arable lands can be used under the farming of various crops, it would boost total yield.
Project Director of the project 'Raising crop intensification in Sylhet region' Md Ohiduzzaman presided over the event and DAE Additional Director, Sylhet division, Md Albabur Rahman was present as the chief guest.
The project had already made some impact in the last three years, the speakers said.
They said the Sylhet division has a unique geographical location. It has a vast haor area, pain land and also hilly zones. Cultivators are also applying different farming methods.
Crop intensity has risen to 169 per cent in the last three years, since the project was started in 30 upazilas out of 39 in the division. However, nationally it is 192 per cent now.
It is a must to use high yielding varieties of crops. Besides, the farmers are to be trained and motivated for using quality seeds, fertilisers and follow newer farming techniques, the speakers said.
Dr Md Jashim Uddin Bhuiyan of BARI and Nibash Chandra Debnath of Seed Certification Agency were present on the occasion, among others.
