SYLHET, Nov 02: State-run Jalalabad Gas Transmission & Distribution Company Limited (JGTDCL) has taken up a programme to set up 50,000 prepaid meters for domestic users in Sylhet city and neighbouring areas in three months.

A field survey for the purpose will begin soon in the target areas and it will be completed in a short time, an official said. In line with the programme, installation of the meters would begin in March, 2022. The JGTDCL, a subsidiary under the state-run Petrobangla, has been entrusted with the distribution of natural gas for domestic and industrial users in the greater Sylhet region.

With a view to reducing the misuse of gas, JGTDCL has taken up the Tk 1.18 billion (118 crore 55 lakh) project. It has already been approved by the ECNEC with a target to complete the job by December, 2022 for supplying prepaid meters to 50,000 dwelling houses.

Under the project, an information centre and online facilities would also be set up. If implemented, small industrial units in the region would also be benefited as the saved gas would be given to them, the official hinted.

On average, each of the 63,000 domestic subscribers consume 66 cft gas per month. On implementation of the project, it would go down to 40 cft gas while the monthly bill would go down to Tk 300 from the existing Tk 900, the official added. However, a domestic subscriber will have to use only a stove.
