SYLHET, Oct 01: The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has allocated Tk 2.5 billion (250 crore) for reconstruction of the much-talked- about important road from the most remote Madhyanagar upazila to Mohishkhola via Bangalvita after 12 years.
When completed, it will bring a major change and new era, said a number of locals. Work on the road would start soon in three packages.
Of them, work on moheshkhola to Bangalvita has started while bidding is on process for two other packages, on Madhyanagar to Chamordani and Chamardani to Mohrshkhola parts.
Sources informed that the LGED constructed the road from Madhyanagar to Moheshkhola in 2011-2012, but the strong waves of the haor waters during the monsoon washed away its major part during the last one decade.
Besides, the damaged road had been washed away on many points by floods this year. Soil had been washed away from both sides of the road as well as from culvert and bridge approaches, causing huge sufferings for over one lakh people of the region. Both the sides have vast haors.
A number of locals said in addition to the people of villages in Bongshikunda Uttar, Bongshikunda Dakshin and Chamordani unions of Madhyanagar, inhabitants of the neighbouring Tahirpur upazila also use the road regularly. But, the all weather road with brick soling is badly damaged by the severe and repeated floods in recent years and pieces of bricks lying scattered here and there.
The common people of the vast and remote haor region are happy seeing the start of road construction work after being suspended for long years, said trader Ataur Rahman of Madhyanagar bazar.
Chamardani union parishad chairman Alamgir Khosru said we demand for immediate start of the work on all the 3 packages so that things complete in time. It's the most important road of the vast haor region linking Sunamganj district with the neighboring Netrokona. We the people of a vast area had been suffering extremely for ages.
College student Shofiqul Islam of village Kalagar said, being the most important road of the upazila, it remained just neglected for over a decade. However we now urge upon the authority to reconstruct the road as soon as possible for ending the sufferings of thousands of people of the vast haor region. The work quality should also be ensured, he noted.
An LGED official said the road from Madhyanagar to Moheshlhola is the most important road of the vast haor habitats. A number of culvert and bridges are needed on the 25-km road for a good link of the haor areas.
"We have a target to complete the whole work in two to three years, he added, it will end long felt trouble of the region."
