Tomato farming brings solvency to poor peasants in Bogura

BOGURA, Dec 03: Bumper output and fair market price of tomato have brought solvency among the extreme poor peasants of Bogura district this current season.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office, the farmers of the district have cultivated tomato on 235 bighas of land aiming to be self-reliant from middle of October. They have already started harvesting the crops in small scale.

With the logistic support of the authority concerned, tomato farming is increasing across Dhunot, Sherpur, Sonatola, Sarakandi, Shibganj, Dupchanchia, Kahaloo, Adamdighi, Gabtoly, Nandigram and sadarupazilas of the district.

The farmers have already started harvesting the crops and selling at Tk 100 to 120 per KG in the retail market while Tk 90 to 100 in the wholesale markets.

"I have spent Tk15,000 to grow tomato on 33 decimals of land this current season," said farmer Chhumir Uddin under Dupchanchiaupazila. He again said, "I have already started harvesting of fresh tomato and sold Tk 20,000 and expecting to sell over Tk 40,000 from rest of the crops."

On a recent visit to different areas of the district this correspondent found the farmers are taking care of their farms to get eye catching output. The farmers are trying to cut the poverty with the farmingas the price remains high both in retail and wholesale markets.

The farmers are getting benefited growing Bari-1, Bari-2 and chery tomato variety this season, said sub-assistant agriculture officer Raridur Rahman adding that they are providing all sorts of necessary support. The farmers in the district are also pocketing three-to-four times profits compared to seasonal tomato.

Farmers have sown the seeds provided by Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) in high land using measure organic and chemicalfertiliser, said sub-assistant agriculture officer Azizur Rahman.

He also said, the soil of the region is quite favourable for tomato cultivation. The cultivation of the noted crops is gaining momentum in the district due to its lure profit.

Some farmers of the district are growing tomato this season withenvironment- friendlymethodas the farmers have got bumper and fresh yield last year. Some fields were found covered with nets to save the crops from attack of birds.

With suggestion ofDAEpoison-free tomato farming in various placesis gaining momentum as its cultivation is proved to the farmers as lucrative. The farmers are getting both fair price and bumper production with the method.

Deputy Director of DAE MdDulal Hossain saidfavourable weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-inputs have helped boost bumper tomato output this current season. The farmers are getting satisfactory market price, DD added.
