Two bridges in Faridganj unfit for traffic

CHANDPUR, Feb 28: Two very important bridges in Faridganj upazila of the district have become dilapidated for a long time, which may collapse any time causing a fatal accident.
The bridges that were built over the Dakatia river many years ago are located at Ailer and Katakhali villages.
The Ailer bridge has turned run-down. Two weeks ago, it collapsed while a tractor loaded with goods was crossing it. A hole has developed on the bridge which is getting bigger day by day.
Locals said the bridge is very necessary for the movement of the people of 10/12 villages in the upazila.
The bridge that is used by thousands of people and vehicles all day has been dilapidated for lack of proper maintenance.
When contacted, local UP chairman Alauddin Bhuiyan has told the FE, "We'll repair the bridge as early as possible."
Upazila Engineer Abrar Ahmed has told the FE, "We'll repair the broken parts of the bridge very soon.''
Besides, Katakhali bridge which has become vulnerable. The bridge has become very risky due to lack of repair work, locals said.
Every day thousands of people, including women and schoolchildren, have to cross this bridge amid panic and risks.
Talking to the FE, locals said that for repair of the bridge, they went to public representatives who turned a deaf ear to their demand. "When a vehicle gets on this bridge, it trembles. So, drivers avoid this bridge,'' many a commuter said.
When contacted, Engineer Abrar said, "Tender process of this bridge will be done very soon and after the allocation of fund, construction work on a new bridge will start."
