SYLHET, Mar 11: Application of different modern methods on cropland has been on rise in the Sylhet division as a good number of farmers are getting involved with raising interest on these, sources informed.
Although the common farmers in greater Sylhet region were less interested in agriculture for different reasons, things started getting a big change in recent years, said additional director of DAE, Sylhet divisional office, Md Altabur Rahman.
They have already started applying the different modern methods in line with the suggestions and advice from agriculture officials, he said, adding, it would help increasing production of paddy and other crops.
Of the total cultivated lands during the current Boro season in Sylhet region, organic manure has been applied on 49,083 hectares of land while balanced fertiliser has been applied on 290,430 hectares, standard sapling were planted on 383,676 hectares while granular urea is being applied on 730 hectares, Leaf Colour Chart (LCC) supply to farmers on 77,460 hectares, perching is being done on 373,019 hectares, Line sowing was done 315,962 hectares, alternate wet drying (AWD) on 5,580 hectares and light trap is being set on 960 hectares. Besides, ideal seed bed was set on selected lands.
Against a target of 467,514 hectares, Boro paddy has already been cultivated on 481,341 hectares in 4 districts of the division this season, the official added, most of the farmers are now on the field engaged in taking care of the much-desired paddy crop. Although some farmers would transplant the crop a few days more i.e till 15 March the target had already been exceeded.
Of the total, 83,350 hectares are cultivated in Sylhet, having a target of 80,444 hectares, 54,012 hectares in Moulvibazar against the target of 52,471 hectares and 121,430 hectares in Habiganj having a target of 36,533 hectares while it is highest 222,549 hectares in Sunamganj district against a target of 219,294 hectares.
Having a favourable weather as yet in all the four districts, the farmers expect that the cultivation programme would be a better one this season, said the official.
