JHENIDAH, Mar 8: Thousands of people are facing trouble for lack of periodical maintenance of a 7.2-kilometre Poradah UP (Chitholia footbridge) to Jagoti Sugar Mill road bearing ID No. 250943017 under Mirpur upazila in Kushtia. This road has connected Kushtia town with Poradah haat, the biggest cloth market in the country.
People from different districts of Bangladesh come to this hat which sits thrice a week, to sell or purchase a large volume of clothes through the dilapidated road experiencing difficulties and hazards.
Agricultural crops-laden vehicles from various villages of Poradah union bound for different markets in Kushtia cannot ply on this road and they need to cover additional ten kilometer way through the Poradah to Kushtia road via Mirpur which involves much more time sometimes leaving raw goods rotten and hiking carrying costs of the items.
The sufferings of the students of Poradah Degree College, Poradah Boys' School, Poradah Girls' School and nearby primary schools have also gone up as they grapple with the trouble they face while passing through the road either on foot or by any mode of transport.
Vehicles like buses, trucks and other modes of transports very often meet road accidents while moving along the road due to its horrible condition.
Md. Moksud Ali, president of Poradah Haat Committee, told this correspondent that the road has turned unfit for movements causing sufferings to the people who travel along it.
If periodical maintenance is done soon to this vitally important road, according to locals, easy and smooth communication system could be restored resulting in overall development of the area.
Tohidul Haque, Upazila Engineer, LGED, Mirpur, Kushtia, while contacted, told The Financial Express, "It's an important union parishad road. We sent proposal for its maintenance work last year but due to financial constraints the work could not be taken up. I'll try my level best to include the road under maintenance programme next year.''
