BOGURA, Sept 27: Vegetable seedling farmers of Shajahanpur upazila may incur a loss of Tk 10 million for the prolonged rain in the district.
A good number of peasants of Shahnagar, Bihigram and Barapathar villages and surrounding areas are suffering much as the vegetable seedlings for upcoming winter season have been submerged.
Some growers said they were trying to protect the seedlings by making isles but failed.
They said, "We cannot save seedlings of chilli, eggplant, pointed gourd, cabbage, cauliflower and okra from rainwater."
Meanwhile, some other farmers of Shahnagar village made new seedbeds and sown seeds but they are afraid that they will not get a good result.
Amjad Hossain, president of the Shahnagar Vegetable Seedling Nursery Owners' Association, said vegetable seedling nursery owners, like other professionals, have already been affected during the pandemic and now heavy rain hit them badly.
He urged the government to provide assistance to save the growers.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Noor Alam said a report has already been prepared and sent to the department concerned stating the present situation of the area. If government allocation is available for the victims, it will be handed over to the farmers, he added.
