Vegetable cultivation changes farmers\\\' fate in Barguna

BARGUNA, Nov 3 (BSS): Many farmers who used to cultivate paddy, wheat, jute and other crops are now cultivating vegetables as it has changed the fate of peasants' in six upazilas of the district in recent times.
A good number of farmers in different upazilas in the district have been producing different varieties of vegetables commercially for the last few years and many of them have already become financially solvent.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources said, a total of 2,500 hectares of land in six upazilas of the district were brought under vegetable farming during the current season with a production target of 40,000 tonnes.
Farmers are now producing different high-yielding varieties of vegetables like tomato, cauliflower, cabbage, pumpkin, radish, eggplants, bean using modern agro technology for boosting production.
Biraj Biswas, a farmer of Kutubpur area at Sadar upazila, said he cultivated eggplants on two bighas of land in the current season by spending Taka 10,000 and earned Tk 40,000. He also cultivated cabbage on one bigha of land and is expecting good return, he added.
Ashok Halder, Deputy Director of DAE said, after meeting the local demand, different varieties of vegetables are being supplied to Barisal and others parts of the division.
Many farmers alleged as there is no marketing facilities, middlemen are cashing benefit from it and they urged the government to take proper steps for marketing vegetables for the sake of farmers.
