PABNA, Apr 27: Bumper production of wheat has failed to bring smile on the farmer's face in the Pabna district due to fall in price of wheat on wholesale and retail markets.

Retailers said wheat is being sold at Tk 830 Tk 850 per maund while the price was Tk 900 to Tk 940, just a week ago.

Farmers said they are being compelled to sell their produce at lower prices to repay the loan they took with high interest rate for wheat cultivation.

According to the district officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE),  1,12,920  tonnes of wheat have been produced this season on 37,023 hectares of land.

Md Abul Bashar, a farmer of Matiabari village under Maligasa union in Pabna Sadar Upazila, said fall in the price of wheat in retail markets is heavily impacted the prices in wholesale wheat markets of the district from the very outset of harvest.
