RAJSHAHI, Oct 15 (BSS): Wide-range promotion of direct seeding rice has become an urgent need for saving irrigation water in the present context of water-stress condition, scientists and researchers at a farmers gathering said here yesterday.

They viewed at least 3,500 liters of water are needed for production of one-kilogram of rice in the conventional system at present but the figure could be reduced to its half through promotion of modern technologies particularly by dry-direct seeding technologies.

The observations came at a field day discussion styled "Role of Conservational Agriculture to make the Farming Production Sustainable and Intensive" held at Paikartala-Dharampur village under Durgapur Upazila of the district.

Regional Wheat Research Center (RWRC) and Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) jointly organized the event in association with a project titled "Sustainable and Resilient Farming System Intensification in the Eastern Gangetic Plain (SRFSI)".
