WMRI-2, BARI-32 wheat farming gets popular in Gopalganj

Farmers eye huge benefits as harvest going on

GOPALGANJ, MAR 28: Farmers of Muksudpur Upazila in the district are highly benefitting from their WMRI-2 and BARI-32 wheat varieties this year as their harvest is going on in full swing.

A total of 3,655 hectares of land has been brought under the wheat cultivation with a production target of 15,000 tonnes, according to sources at local agriculture office.

Abdur Rahman (Rana), sub-assistant agriculture officer (SAAO) in Maharajpur Union under Muksudpur, told the FE that WMRI-2 & BARI-32 wheat varieties gained huge popularity among farmers in this region.

"Growers get huge benefit from the produce which farming expenditure is low," he added.

Cultivating wheat on one bigha (33 decimal) of land spends Tk 8,500 and farmers get 13 maunds of wheat which market price is Tk 17,000.

A maund of wheat is selling at Tk 1,300 in market. So, farmers in this region are more interested in the wheat farming, Mr Rahman added.

Wadut Miah, 45, a farmer of Bangram village under Maharajpur Union in Muksudpur, says he has cultivated WMRI-2 wheat on four bighas (208 decimals) of land this year.

"The production of the wheat variety is satisfactory. If the weather condition remains favourable, I will get 81 maunds of wheat which market price is Tk 105,300. The total cultivation cost is Tk 51,000," he added.

Chunnu Molla, 55, another farmer of Ramkrishnapur village under Maharajpur Union in Muksudpur, told this correspondent that he cultivated BARI-32 wheat on three bighas of land this year.

Bahauddin Sheikh, upazila agriculture officer (AUO) in Muksudpur, told the FE that about 3,655 hectares of land have been brought under WMRI-2 & BARI wheat-32 wheat farming this year.

Nearly 23,000 small and marginal farmers are involved in farming these wheat varieties.

Both soil and weather are favourable for wheat farming in Muksudpur where farmers word hard to farm this cash crop.

Wheat farming is more profitable than other crops. So, farmers are more interested in cultivating WMRI-2 & BARI wheat-32 wheat varieties. These wheat origins are gaining popularity in this region, the UAO added.

Abdul Kadir Sarder, deputy director (agriculture), Khamarbari, Gopalganj, told the FE a total of 5,350 hectares of land has been brought under the wheat cultivation in the district current year. WMRI-2 & BARI-32 wheat varieties are gaining popularity in Muksudpur which soil and weather is favourable for wheat farming.
