Woman killed for dowry in Jessore

JESSORE, Jun 1 (BSS): A five-month pregnant housewife was allegedly killed by her husband for dowry at Nayra village under Jhikargachha upazila of Jessore district on Friday night. The victim was identified as Halima Khatun, 26, wife of Akimul Islam of the village under the same upazila. Police sources said Akimul married Halima, daughter of Liakat Ali of Putkhali village eight months back. After marriage, Akimul Has been demanding cash Taka and gold ornaments to Halima's father as dowry. But he could not meet the demand. On that night, Akimul began to quarrel with his wife over the dowry. At one stage, he killed Halima. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Jessore hospital morgue for post-mortem. Akimul fled the house after the incident. A case was filed with the concerned thana in this connection.
