Women empowerment for sustainable dev emphasised

RANGPUR, July 20 (BSS): Speakers at a workshop here have stressed on the need for empowering grassroots level female public representatives to accelerate women empowerment aiming to achieve sustainable national development.

Kawnia upazila administration organised the day-long workshop styled "Women Empowerment and Challenges" under the Upazila Governance Project at the upazila parishad auditorium in Kawnia upazila town recently.

Facilitated by Kawnia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Syed Farhad Hossain union and upazila level female public representatives, NGO executives, women community leaders, journalists and civil society members participated in the workshop.

UNDP Representative Mahbub Rahman, Upazila Agriculture Officer Shamimur Rahman, Upazila Education Officer Golam Asaduzzaman, Upazila Women Affairs Officer Rebecca Yasmin addressed the workshop as the resource persons.

Taking part in the open discussion, a number of elected female public representatives narrated their field level experiences and stressed for ensuring their equal rights in making local government institutions more effective and accountable.

The female public representatives can contribute largely in poverty alleviation, reproductive health and family planning, female education, marriage and birth registration, paving the way to ensure women empowerment, they said.
