SYLHET, Feb 24: Another LC station is being upgraded into a full fledged Landport in Sylhet.

Tamabil was declared a land port on Dauki-Tamabil border in 2001, but it started operating after 16 years in 2017.

The Sheola LC station on Sylhet-Assam border in Beanibazar upazila was declared the second Land port on June 30 of 2015. However, things remained hanging as no work was done for years. The previous manpower and infrastructure continued serving as LC station. At last the development project to upgrade the LC station was started formally by the state minister for Water transportation Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on February 13this year.

A number of traders engaged in export and import said due to better communication with the 7 sister states through the Sheola border, the frontier trade would be improved when it is developed. However, the LC station remained almost shut after the outbreak of Covid- 19 pandemic last year. Only fruits are now being imported, they said.

President of the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCI) ATM Shoeb said our exporters and importers expect a better business with the setting up of the Land port, which had been a long felt demand and added, the Indian businesses also stressed on it during our business visit to Assam. They also raised it during their visit to Sylhet, in 2015.

The Sheola land port is being developed at a cost of taka 1.24 billion by the Bangladesh Land port Authority. Works are being done under the Regional Connectivity project-1, assisted by the World Bank. The works are set to be completed in two years, said an official.
