KABUL, Aug 28 (AFP): NATO and Afghan troops killed more than 20 Taliban insurgents in separate battles in southern Afghanistan, including a raid on a rebel bunker system, the alliance said Tuesday.
Militants armed with machine guns and rocket propelled-grenades attacked a joint patrol near the major Taliban stronghold of Musa Qala in opium-producing Helmand province on Monday, it said.
A dozen insurgents were killed when local and foreign forces returned fire, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement.
The soldiers then swept through nearby residential compounds, it said.
"During the search, a trench-bunker system was found and three of the insurgents were killed there by direct fire," it said.
