21st February: Time for fresh resolve
February 18, 2015 00:00:00
21st February is just round the corner. We observe the day every year with solemnity. On this day in 1952, some brave sons of this soil sacrificed their lives to protect our mother tongue from the clutches of an imperialist power. By laying down their lives, the immortal sons of the country inspired the people to achieve independence in 1971 through a bloody struggle and later have the day recognized as the International Mother Language Day. The 21st February teaches us to love our language and also to show respect for others' mother tongues. The United Nations declared this day as the International Mother Language Day in 1999 and it is a matter of great honour and pride for us. We, as a nation, must draw inspiration from the day and contribute our might for the development and well-being of the country.
This year the day arrives amid unforeseen political turmoil. I think, we should take a cue from the spirit of the day to bury once and for all our differences and pave the way for a peaceful and progressive society for the coming generation. We must put to rest all our agonies and unrest through peaceful dialogues and should never resort to activities that damage the country and its people. We must take a vow so that we can be united and can take our country to the path of peace and prosperity. We can truly celebrate the 21st February when we shall be able to build a country free of poverty, illiteracy and corruption.
