A potential tourism hub remains neglected

April 25, 2026 00:00:00

Tahirpur Upazila of Sunamganj is a wonder of nature, where the combination of scenic attractions such as Tanguar Haor, Shimul Bagan, Niladri Lake, the Jadukata River, and Barek Tilla has made the region a unique and enchanting destination. The vast haor area has endowed Tahirpur with immense potential in agriculture and fisheries; the fields produce abundant paddy, and the wetlands teem with diverse species of fish.

However, set against this immense potential is a harsh reality -- Tahirpur severely lags in infrastructural and human development. The road system is nearly broken; previously constructed paved roads are now dilapidated, while unpaved ones are virtually unusable. With the onset of the monsoon, the entire upazila becomes almost isolated, leaving boats as the only means of transport. Consequently, essential services, including education, healthcare and trade are badly disrupted.

There is an acute crisis in the education sector. Quality institutions are almost non-existent; although a few colleges exist, the standard of education remains poor. Healthcare is equally neglected. Due to the lack of adequate hospitals, people are deprived of even basic medical treatment -- a situation that worsens during the monsoon, posing serious risks to human life.

The natural hardships of the haor region are ever-present. Sudden floods, mountain runoff, and prolonged waterlogging frequently destroy crops, leaving farmers in constant uncertainty.

In this context, there is an urgent need for the relevant authorities to acknowledge this neglected reality and adopt a sustainable, integrated development plan. Investing in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and climate resilience will not only improve the lives of rural communities but also unlock Tahirpur's vast potential as a thriving tourism hub, contributing meaningfully to the local and national economy.
