LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

A tragic reminder of healthcare inefficiency

May 11, 2026 00:00:00

The heartbreaking death of 10-month-old Mahazabi, who reportedly died after spending three days in the ICU, has once again exposed the painful reality of healthcare suffering faced by many families in Bangladesh. The image of a grieving mother, Shiyuli Akter, breaking down in tears while placing her head on her child's forehead, is not just a personal tragedy -- it is a reflection of a larger humanitarian crisis.

Families travel from distant districts like Noakhali to seek advanced treatment with hope and desperation. Yet many of them face uncertainty, inadequate medical support, financial pressure and emotional trauma. For parents, watching a child struggle for life inside an ICU is perhaps one of the cruelest experiences imaginable.

This tragic incident raises important questions about accessibility, quality and preparedness within our healthcare system. Intensive care facilities remain limited compared to the growing demand, particularly for children. Many hospitals struggle with overcrowding, shortage of equipment and insufficient specialised services.

Healthcare is not merely a service; it is a basic human necessity. The pain of losing a child should not be worsened by systemic limitations or delays in proper treatment. The authorities concerned must strengthen emergency and intensive care facilities, especially for children, and ensure that patients from all regions receive timely and adequate medical support.

Behind every headline is a family carrying unimaginable grief. Mahazabi's death should not become just another forgotten news story. It should serve as a reminder that improving healthcare infrastructure and ensuring compassionate medical care must remain a national priority.
