Accommodation crisis in public universities

April 20, 2021 00:00:00

One of the main problems of our public universities is that they seriously lack residential facilities. Most public universities in Bangladesh enrol students more than the seat capacity in the dormitories. Students who come from distant places often, therefore, need to spend the first two of their university years in crowded, chaotic situations of guest or common room. According to estimations, there are only 220 dormitories for more than 250,000 public university students across the country.Students and teachers termed the facilities too inadequate to accommodate such a large number. Many first-year students are forced to live in crowded rooms that lack minimum facilities and where they hardly can concentrate on their studies.

Every university should have a plan to enrol students considering their accommodation capacity and ensure accommodation for minimum three-fourths students because only one-fourth of students may have the ability to bear the costs of living in rented places. The university authorities should allow only the enrolled students to stay at the dorms as many former students are sometimes found occupying seats illegally. We hope that the authorities concerned will take proper initiatives to construct new dorms for the students to resolve the accommodation crisis.
