Agro-based industry

Agriculture accounts for about 18 per cent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) and absorbs around 45 per cent of the workforce. Majority of the people are still dependent on agriculture, agribusiness, agro-processing, farm trade and a series of other activities relating to agriculture. The Bangladesh agriculture is quite diverse now, although it is dominated by rice culture. Jute is an exceptional cash crop which has new potential with innovative use. The country has witnessed a revolution in poultry, fisheries and fruits production in the recent decades. Non-farm rural activities are growing in keeping pace with increasing productivity and diversification of the farm sector.
Businessmen, agronomists and agriculture scientists are of the view that there could be more business ventures based on agriculture. Farming in the northern region has changed significantly once the bridge over the mighty Jamuna has connected the region with the capital. As the road network is increasingly connecting all parts of the country, both farmers and businessmen could benefit from the process of value addition to agricultural produces. More jobs would be created as a result. As far as consumers are concerned, it is well known, they need quality foods at affordable price. So, growers and entrepreneurs of new generation should take advantage of the new kind of demand created in society.
