Dhaka is bustling with illegal structures the number of which is more than 5,000. Recently, it has been disclosed by the Housing and Public Works Minister in parliament. I will not be surprised if the actual figure is more than the figure the honourable minister revealed. He also stated that the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) had detected some 321 buildings in the capital city risky which is certainly alarming.
It is surprising that two years have passed since 321 buildings were identified as vulnerable in the city, but the Rajuk and the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) are yet to take any action against those. It is like sitting on a ticking time bomb. The owners of these illegal and risky buildings will try to prevent any government steps so that they do not face any monetary losses ignoring the safety issue of the common people and sometimes of their own. The government should go tough here and demolish all the illegal and risky structures so that the safety of the public is ensured. We must not forget that a stitch in time saves nine.
