Alarming rise in kidney disease

July 13, 2014 00:00:00

It is shocking to learn that about 40,000 people die every year in our country due to kidney diseases. It is also a matter of serious concern that almost 18 million people are suffering from kidney-related ailments.

The cost of treatment of kidney diseases is so high that most of patients and families can not simply afford it due to poverty. If one becomes victim to this disease, the entire family faces  immense financial hardship.  The number of patients is increasing alarmingly and unexpectedly across the country.

On the other hand, common people have very little knowledge about the disease. Under this circumstance, people can not diagnose it at the right time. The treatment opportunities are also very limited compared to those in developed countries. Many people cannot get lifesaving treatment like dialysis and other associated medicines which force the affluent patients to go abroad for better treatment. The poor patients are left to die.

We need to create awareness among the people so that they can take preventive measures against this deadly disease. To save kidney, everybody should drink a plenty of water to replenish dehydration and avoid excessive salt. Regular exercise, avoidance of smoking and alcohol beverage may be better ways to keep our kidneys healthy. It is necessary to remember that prevention is better than cure.
