Alarming rise in liver diseases

December 02, 2018 00:00:00

A survey by the Hepatology Society has found that one in every three citizens of Bangladesh is suffering from some sort of liver disease.

But the country does not have enough specialised doctors and hospitals to fight the disease. Also, Bangladesh does not have any liver transplant centres.

Hepatitis is the most common cause of liver diseases in the world. Five different viruses cause hepatitis in people. Hepatitis A and E are caused by contaminated food, water, and human waste. Hepatitis B, C, and D are spread through an infected person's blood or body fluids. As the liver failure progresses, the patient becomes weak and eventually slips into a coma.

Also, there has been a prevalence of fatty liver disease among the adults in the country. To avoid the disease, one should choose a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. Maintaining a healthy weight is also necessary. People should also have regular medical checkups to stay aware of their health risks.

Given the prevalence of liver diseases, the government should plan to set up more health facilities and hospitals that can treat such patients in growing number.
