Road accidents across the country have reached an alarming level. Only on Sunday last at least five persons including a doctor were killed in separate road mishaps. Many more were injured. Every year thousands of families lose their near and dear ones and when a person dies his family suffers huge mental and financial agony.
Statistics suggest that 50 per cent of those who died in road accidents are people between 14 and 35 years of age. It further revealed that the Dhaka Chittagong highway is the most accident-prone highways in the country. If we can prevent accident there, many valuable lives can be saved. It is also noticed that the number of accidents go up during the Eid holidays. Most accidents happen due to poor road condition and reckless driving.
The authorities only wake up from slumber before Eid holidays and they hurriedly do some half-hearted work which does not last long. We do not want such cosmetic repair work. Police is also seen going to action after a serious accident takes place. Poor people who travel on the rooftop of the bus or train are more susceptible to accidents. Police should be stringent against rooftop travelling.
