All foreign forces must withdraw from Iraq: Syria

October 03, 2007 00:00:00

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 2 (AFP): Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem Monday called for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Iraq and for increased international aid to help his country shelter Iraqi refugees.
In an address to the UN General Assembly session, he also rejected charges that Syria was not doing enough to stop the flow of fighters and arms across its border into Iraq.
He said a solution to the conflict in Iraq must begin with national reconciliation "based on the principle of respect for the will of all Iraqis to determine their political future."
"We therefore stress the need for the withdrawal of all foreign forces, subject to the agreement of the Iraqi government, because this measure will contribute to curbing the violence."
"The occupying power (the US) spends hundreds of billions of dollars on military operations inside Iraq but fails to allocate any resources to assist Iraqis who have been forced out of Iraq as a result of occupation and its concomitant repercussions."
