It was simply shocking to learn about some unruly elements attacking the motorcade of Khaleda Zia when she was conducting a campaign in support of her party-backed candidates for the city corporation election. The pictures of the attackers came out in the newspapers. The government in its own interest should take into custody those who were involved in such activities. Such incidents seriously mar the peaceful atmosphere essentially required before the upcoming city election.
The election commission has a role to play here and ensure the safety of all contestants and their peaceful campaigners to ensure a level playing field. These incidents will only increase the popularity of the opposition candidates as sympathy of the common people will be drawn towards them. I hope the government will investigate into the matter as it is seriously undermining the rule of law. The EC should play a more active role and ensure a level playing field for everyone. The government is already in serious image crisis due to the Bangla New Year incident where some women were sexually assaulted. This incident has further dented its image.
