A bank functions as the lifeblood of an economy where total economy of a country depends or rotates considering smooth operation of banking. Bankers sometimes have to act as financial engineer. Depending on them, a particular bank stands as a pillar of confidence among general people.
Generally a banker represents a bank. Each individual's ideology and morality are interrelated with people's trust reposed in a bank.
To provide spontaneous service, bankers have to face some obstacles regarding different festivals and sometimes break the code of conduct. In recent years, on the occasion of festivals especially Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha, bankers have to provide extra services. This is not smart banking and denial of financial strength of versatile banking tools as mobile banking, internet banking, and round-the-clock banking facility in Bangladesh.
The main reason for keeping banks open at the time of Eid holidays is to pay salary to garments workers. Different pressure groups such as BGMEA or BKMEA along with business chambers make commitment to provide salary and bonus of the workers and employees on a particular date just before the Eid. This practice is good and a positive sign of development for the garments industry.
In most of the cases the Bangladesh Bank instructs commercial banks to remain open before Eid. This approach is a negative one. Now time has come to think in an alternative way as scope for banking has increased to mitigate the demand of Eid banking.
If Bangladesh bank makes a rule for garments industries to take banking facility related with import and export, the industries have to open salary accounts of their workers and employees with ATM card facility. That will be more transparent in maintaining salary structure. Many un-banked people will be bank-oriented and side by side risk of cash traction will be reduced for the garments industries owner. Within a short time banking software has the capacity to transmit funds to thousands of salary accounts.
The central bank should consider the interest of garments industries or pressure groups from the view point of banks and authorised dealer banks.
Against Eid transaction pressure, commercial banks can strengthen ATM facility and cash transaction limit can be increased. Online banking and mobile banking facilities along with better customer care unit contribute to faster service. These financial tools can help leverage banking services to a round-the-clock facility before Eid for individual accountholders of bank as well as corporate customers.
