Better public buses for women

August 02, 2023 00:00:00

Most of the women and children in Dhaka don't have any safe public transport. It is a sad thing. Thousands of women have to go outside every day for various reasons. They go to schools for their children, they go to offices and workplaces, and they go to markets. Most of them depend on public buses. Those are terrible. These buses are mostly depleted, dirty, and congested. Those are not women-friendly at all. Most of the male co-passengers are non-cooperative or indifferent. Verbal and physical harassment are regular things. Only a few women have the courage to protest against harassment.

There were some efforts to introduce public buses dedicated to women. All the efforts failed, which is not acceptable. It is not impossible to introduce dedicated buses for women. It is also desirable to have decent and spacious public buses for all. The metro-rail has become a reality in the city of Dhaka. So, the introduction of better and clean public buses is the demand of time.
