Beware of self-medication

July 22, 2024 00:00:00

Medications play a crucial role in treating illnesses, offering both beneficial and harmful side effects. When used appropriately, they yield positive results, but misuse can lead to incalculable harms, sometimes even death. Unfortunately, this mistake is becoming increasingly common among the people in Bangladesh.

Dangerous drug abuse is escalating nationwide. People frequently self-administer certain medicines. In an attempt to alleviate minor ailments, individuals often resort to consuming various medicines, particularly antibiotics readily available in the market. People can easily purchase antibiotics from pharmacies and use those without prescriptions.

However, this casual approach to medication can have detrimental consequences. Continuous, unregulated intake of such drugs can lead to adverse side effects.

It is imperative to understand the proper usage of medications and seek guidance from healthcare professionals when necessary. Misuse not only compromises the effectiveness of the medication but also poses significant risks to one's health. Moreover, the indiscriminate use of antibiotics contributes to the global issue of antimicrobial resistance.

Awareness of responsible medication usage and the potential consequences of misuse is crucial in curbing this trend. By promoting awareness and fostering a culture of informed decision-making regarding medication, we can mitigate the risks associated with their misuse and safeguard public health.
