Biman blues

Media reports indicate that a huge amount of money is being spent for the Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The way it is being done is simply inconceivable. It reminds me of a saying "Shorkar ka mal; daria may dhal", meaning, 'empty government money in the river'. This is now actually happening in case of Biman. In New York alone, we are wasting nearly Tk 20 million annually; with no flights for many years. Same is the story for many non-operating stations abroad.
Biman seems to be in a mega mess. Money is spent on 'easy come, easy go' basis. This national organisation needs a strict management with total ban on union activities. We just cannot afford to waste taxpayer's money in this fashion any longer.
Another option is to lease the management out, with full freedom to hire and fire, and take decisions independently. All operational decisions, including route selection, manpower hiring and firing should rest with them. If something in this line is done, Biman may be salvaged in five or six years' time.
The leaseholder organisation should guarantee that breakeven shall be reached after a certain period from the date they take over the management control. The government will make all the capital payments now and in future.
