Blair makes maiden Mideast tour for Quartet

AMMAN, July 23(AFP):Tony Blair makes his maiden voyage to the Middle East as special envoy for the peace Quartet this week amid a flurry of diplomatic activity aimed at reviving the moribund peace process.
Blair lands today in Jordan at the start of a three-day visit that will also take him to Israel and the West Bank.
"He's going very much in listening mode," Blair's London- based spokesman told AFP.
His appointment has been hailed by Israel and some Palestinians close to moderate president Mahmud Abbas, but blasted by the increasingly powerful Islamist Hamas movement, which sees Blair as too close to both Israel and the United States.
