Blood donation: A New Year resolution

The year 2019 will start tomorrow. People will make new resolutions for the upcoming year in a bid to change their life for the better. I feel that Bangladeshis should keep a resolution in their list that they will donate blood regularly. In the process, they will help themselves and also help patients in need of blood.
In our country, common people have many misconceptions about blood donation. But donating blood is safe and healthy. When someone wants to donate his or her blood, the doctor will initially examine the person to see if the potential donor is fit to donate blood. In the process, a number of tests are also done for free that can also be helpful for the potential donor.
Blood donation in Bangladesh is an activity conducted by several different organisations like Sandhani, Red Crescent, Badhon and others. It has been estimated that roughly 25 per cent of the nation's blood supply came from the voluntary donation, 20-25 per cent from paid donors, and 50-55 per cent from one-time donation for specific patients.
If the misconception about blood donation can be removed, more and more people will come forward for this noble cause. Blood donation is good not only for a patient but also for donors. Donating blood reduces risk of heart attacks and even cancer. According to a study by the American Medical Association, researchers, people aged 43 to 61 years had fewer heart attacks and strokes when they donated blood every six months.
Also, nothing can be more satisfying than being able to help a human being in distress.
