On the first day of Baishakh, a blood donation camp was arranged by the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society near my house, which was sponsored by the United Commercial Bank Ltd. and Farazi Hospital. I went there to donate my blood. The campaigners were trying to dispel the misconceptions about blood donation and I was surprised to see a number of women donating their blood.
There are many people who are scared of needles and avoid them as far as possible. But we should keep in mind that our momentary pain from a needle can save a person's life. I heard one young donor telling the campaigner that since his blood group is very common and easily available, he did not need to donate his blood. What he possibly forgot is that requirement of blood of common groups is also higher. Blood donation is not only a noble gesture, it also helps one keep healthy. Our little help can save lives of many people who are in urgent need of the same on health grounds. We should not perceive that if we donate blood we shall be weak. Doctors check the health of the donors beforehand and make sure that he or she is fit to donate blood. I hope such campaigns will be arranged very often to create awareness among the people so that all misconceptions about blood donation are dispelled and people come forward in larger numbers to donate their blood to save someone who needs it most.
