LUCKNOW (India), Aug 1 (AP): An overcrowded boat evacuating people from a flooded village capsized in a rain-swollen river in northern India Wednesday, killing at least 28 people, officials said.
Some 80 people panicked and got on the boat that had a capacity for only 30 people. Unable to handle the weight, it overturned mid-river, said Harpal Singh, a government official.
"Forty-five people swam to safety while 28 bodies have been fished out," said Singh, adding that rescuers were searching for the missing.
Most of those on the boat were women and children, he said.
"I was the last man to enter the ill-fated boat that was packed like a can of sardines. There was practically no space to stand," Ramesh Kumar, one of the survivors told the local Sahara Semay television channel.
"I clung to the branches of a tree and survived. Many of the people were washed away," said Kumar, who was still drenched and shivering. "I saw people crying for help but there was no one to help them."
