Bringing down egg price

August 15, 2023 00:00:00

Traditionally, eggs are one of the most affordable sources of protein available. In 2022, the average price of a dozen brown eggs in Bangladesh was Tk 120. It is now around Tk 180. The prices of eggs are increasing by leaps and bounds, Tk 5 - 10 a dozen every week. And if this trend continues, egg price may go beyond Tk 200. It has been months now that the prices of essentials have been soaring, plunging many middle- and low-income families into financial hardship. Although the government has been trying to tackle the effects of food inflation through various measures, there seems to be little control over the prices of some essential food items like egg. It is sad to know that many limited-income people are now buying cracked eggs because they are cheaper. Others have just cut down on egg consumption, or stopped buying eggs altogether. Broiler chickens have also become more expensive, making even middle-class families reduce their intake.

Eggs are a highly nutritious food, rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins A and B12, as well as iron, zinc and iodine. The protein in egg is abundant, digestible and packed with amino acids. Egg yolks are a source of fat and calories, and the entire egg is neatly packaged in a protective shell that keeps what is inside fresh without refrigeration. Eggs are a sustainable source of food that can help us meet our need for protein at a cheap price. However, if this food item's price goes out of common people's reach, what would they do?

Some retailers are reported to have accused producers and wholesalers of the abnormal price increase while others blame a syndicate for this unprecedented situation. Market manipulation is believed to have increased the prices of eggs and a supply shortage has been created artificially. Therefore, the government must adopt and implement strict market monitoring policies that will keep prices in check.
