BRTA—authority responsible for road safety

After I step out of the house, like hosts of other people, I am also unsure if I shall be able to return safely. Accidents are happening every day and most of those are happening because of unfit vehicles and drivers. Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) is responsible for fitness token, vehicle registration and driving licence. The system is really troublesome and time consuming. Even after waiting all day long in a queue one is not sure if fitness token can be obtained on the same day. BRTA has a vital role to play in respect of road safety. If it remains indifferent and issues licences to unfit vehicles and unskilled drivers indiscriminately, people become unduly vulnerable to reckless driving of vehicles on the road. Vehicles that apparently look fit but are actually not, get through the fitness test by backdoor transactions. Most of the time unfit vehicles are cleared this way by some unscrupulous employees. Although BRTA started taking actions lately against the unfit vehicles, the drive was not effective as public transport owners created an artificial crisis by restricting the number of vehicles and causing hardships for the people and thereby putting indirect pressure on BRTA to declare unfit vehicles roadworthy. The BRTA which is responsible for all these must be more sincere and dedicated in discharging its responsibilities properly.
