Can TfL model transform Dhaka's traffic system?

Dhaka is one of the most traffic-congested cities in the world, with some of the worst public transport services globally.

Every year, Dhaka's traffic nightmare costs Bangladesh billions of dollars. According to data from the BUET, the annual financial loss due to traffic congestion amounts to US$4.0 billion. The Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association reports that 8.2 million productive work hours are lost daily due to traffic jams in Dhaka.

A lack of sufficient public transport, narrow roads, and disorganised urban structures exacerbate the crisis. Experts suggest that a city should have roads covering at least 25 per cent of its total area to support an efficient transport system. However, Dhaka has only 12 per cent of its area for roadways. Interestingly, some cities with even less road coverage, such as London, have excellent transportation systems. The secret lies in their well-structured transport management.

London's transportation network is managed by Transport for London (TfL), an organisation overseeing an integrated system of buses, the Tube, trams, and bike-sharing schemes. TfL's comprehensive approach to managing public transport and road infrastructure makes London a global model for urban mobility.

The good news for Dhaka's residents is that Transport for London (TfL) has agreed to support the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) in improving the city's traffic system.

Since its founding in 2000, TfL has been instrumental in the seamless operation of London's transport system. Beyond running public transport, TfL maintains roads, promotes cycling, ensures safety, and supports London's infrastructure and services.

Following a courtesy meeting with British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke, DNCC Administrator Md. Mahmudul Hasan said, "TfL will offer technical support to DNCC for network management, bus operation, and safety improvements, starting with operations from Gulshan 1 to Gulshan 2 as a test run."

With its expertise in real-time data systems, congestion pricing, and public transit integration, TfL could provide Dhaka with valuable insights into effective traffic management. However, challenges such as Dhaka's overpopulation, limited space for road expansion, and weak enforcement mechanisms require a tailored approach and strong local partnerships to ensure lasting improvements.
