Cases filed against opposition leaders
September 04, 2014 00:00:00
The ruling party is using the strategy of filing numerous legal cases against the leaders of the main opposition party, BNP. It is not a good sign for our politics, because in the future the same tactic may be used by another government against the opposition parties of that time. This is not good for democracy.
This strategy will spoil the political environment of our country. "Do to others as you would have them to do to you" -- we all should remember these words. Most of the leaders and activists of BNP are entangled in a large number of legal cases. In our country, the ruling party never wants to respect the rights of the opposition parties as they think they have been elected for five years, and they can do whatever they would like to do during their term.
Instead of working towards changing the lot of the common man, they become busy perpetuating their power. A strong opposition party is highly necessary for democracy.
The present Parliament has no real opposition. At best, we can say the present opposition in Parliament is a 'B team' of the ruling party. We cannot dream of a functioning democracy with such an opposition in Parliament.
