Caution needed during large gatherings

July 12, 2024 00:00:00

A tragic incident occurred in the Seujgari area of Bogura on Sunday. Around 5 pm, a Ratha Yatra (procession) was brought out from the Iskcon temple in Seujgari, as it does annually. A large number of devotees participated in this yatra, with many walking alongside the chariot. When the procession reached Amtala, the top of the steel chariot came into contact with a high-voltage power line on the side of the road, causing a fire.

More than fifty people were electrocuted in the incident. They were rescued and admitted to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (SHJMEC) and Mohammad Ali Hospital. Sadly, four people died at SHJMEC and one at Mohammad Ali Hospital with two critically injured placed in the ICU.

It was revealed that the administration had previously determined the height of the chariot's top to ensure it cleared the electric wires above the road. The Rath Yatra organising committee had assured the administration that the chariot's height would be adjusted to avoid any contact with the wires. However, this promise was not kept, leading to the accident. The Bogura Deputy Commissioner stated that the organisers of Rath Yatra are responsible for the tragedy. An investigation committee has been formed to determine the exact cause of the accident and to investigate any negligence by the electricity department and the police.

We believe the DC's has stated the truth. The electric wire was stationary, and had the height of the chariot been properly adjusted, this accident would not have occurred. It is often observed that large gatherings for religious events, especially orthodox ones, can lead to unforeseen accidents. In neighbouring India, there have been numerous instances of people being trampled in large crowds.

Special precautions should be taken during religious rituals that attract large crowds. Potential risks and accident scenarios must be carefully considered. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the Bogura yatra accident.
