Celebrating DU's centenary

July 02, 2021 00:00:00

Being a student or a teacher of Dhaka University is a matter of pride. Over the last century, the university has not only offered contemporary higher education but played a historic role in the freedom struggle for an independent Bangladesh. The year 2021 is significant for both Bangladesh and the DU as both have turned 50 and 100 respectively. The centenary of DU, on July1, is not only a monumental milestone for the institution, but also a matter of celebration for the whole country. If we look back, we will find that the university was academically excellent in its early years. Later, the university stayed at the heart of all our important historical movements. Many scholars, academics, luminaries, artists, writers, scientists, researchers, and politicians of the country have been nurtured by this university.

As the DU enters its 100th year of foundation, it is time for it to do some soul-searching. Student politics, once reaching its high mark, has now become entirely depended on political parties. Although DU initially started its journey as an autonomous free-thinking institution, the scope of that free-thinking practice has gradually been shrinking. The university has lost its status as a centre of academic excellence and is not even considered in the list of top 1,000 universities in the world. Moreover, students of the university have many complaints including lack of quality food and accommodation in the dormitories. We urge the authorities concerned to address these issues and try to revive its past glory.
