Celebrating Halloween Day is an alien culture in Bangladesh. Just a few years ago, not many in the country knew what Halloween Day is or how or why it is celebrated. But now, due to increased exposure especially to American pop culture, films, cartoons and television shows, many of us know how to celebrate Halloween. What is more surprising is that a section of our society has started celebrating the day on October 31 by organising events and parties. We are getting invitations to join them through Facebook groups and pages.
It is understandable that there are some city hotels which organise these parties targeting foreigners. But what about local youths arranging parties naming Halloween Night 2023 and others? Why are Bangladeshi youths suddenly celebrating Halloween? Have they run out of festivals to celebrate? In a country where most people still struggle to make both ends meet, celebrating Halloween is nothing but a luxury.
