Chunarughat Govt. College

Any SSC passed student who has minimum target to complete HSC has a long cherished desire to have admission to a government college. They do it with quality education in mind. Of course it lessens the expenditure as well. But there exists a frustrating picture in many public institutions, particularly those located in rural areas. Chunarughat Government (degree) College is one like that. This is the only degree college within an area of 420 squares kilometres where around half a million people live.
Located at the Chunarughat Upazila Headquarter and within the Chunarughat municipality, the college offers a very nice campus. It was established in 1972 and nationalised in 1986. With a hope for quality education people of the upazila sent their children to this college. But soon after admission, their expectations are shattered. Because of its poor standard, admission at the degree level falls dramatically. Finding no other alternative, many students get admission at HSC level. Surprisingly, for almost 1,200 students, a very small number of teachers, maybe only five, are engaged in teaching. On top of that they do not take class on a regular basis. Almost all the year round class remains suspended. There is a scarcity of science teachers. Besides, there are no laboratory and library facilities. Last year only one science student passed the HSC exam where the average pass rate in science group was more than sixty per cent. People are worried about the future of their children.
Although the academic irregularities have been continuing since more than a decade, the authority is yet to take any initiative to improve the situation. As a result, students are deprived of quality education. We urge the authority to take measures to ensure proper education at this public institution.
