RECENTLY the mayors of both city corporations presented an account of their performances before the residents of Dhaka on completion of two years of their tenure. They claimed successes in some aspects which as a resident of more than four decades in Moghbazar-New Eskatan area, Dhaka, I find difficult to accept. In fact, their performance in those aspects leaves a lot to be desired. We clearly remember that a decade ago many a Christian residents of Sheraton Hotel and Hotel Sonargaon used to visit churches at New Eskaton especially on Sundays. Unfortunately no hotel residents do the same now in view of probably the pitiable conditions of footpaths and traffic management.
The footpaths of the area are always full of garbage and at some points accumulated garbage has turned into soil as no disposal took place for years. Water supply from WASA is highly inadequate for several years in New Eskaton Jame Masjid area and the residents are to draw water through suction pumps from the pipes on main roads. We can request the donors to extend some financial assistance for expansion of water supply network in the city as we experience short supply of water on every alternate day. Let the authority think about it seriously.
