City of dustbins

The population of Dhaka is increasing everyday while civic amenities are not. For example, the quantity of garbage from the households is rising. But in absence of proper disposal system, all the household wastes are not removed regularly. As a result, these wastes get piled up at street corners and their vicinity and the entire city is literally turning into a large dustbin. I have to negotiate Progoti Sharoni quite frequently and I see only two dustbins on the road between Merul Badda and North Badda. But both these dustbins have occupied half of the road as well as a large portion of the pavements. It is a big problem for the people who use these roads, including a large number of students who use this road to go to and come back from universities. It poses a serious threat to their health apart from being a major cause of perpetual traffic jam on the road. Similar situation is noticeable on most roadsides in the city. The city is expanding in terms of size and population. Therefore, facilities need to be expanded accordingly. Unfortunately, the effort to do so is missing as a result of which city life remains far from being enjoyable.
The concerned authorities, including the city corporations, appear to be unconcerned of the situation and have no headache about the issue which is rather unfortunate. Placing and maintaining proper dustbins at regular intervals in the city is, among other things, a prime responsibility of the city corporations and is the most important precondition for keeping the city clean. The concerned authorities should take appropriate action and redress the sufferings of the city dwellers.
