Combating rise in crimes
December 26, 2024 00:00:00
Bangladesh, after toppling a despot and taking steps towards a more liberal government, is facing a worrying rise in criminal activities. Weak law enforcement has led to an increase in crimes such as mugging, robbery, killing, and vandalism, which are now common across the country.
In Dhaka, muggings have surged alarmingly, with 36 cases reported in the past 45 days, including four fatalities in a single week. Armed gangs are targeting businesses and individuals, stealing cash and valuables, and creating fear among residents.
Recently, near Jahangirnagar University in Savar, robbers attacked a moving bus, snatching cash, mobile phones, and ornaments from passengers. Tragically, one passenger was fatally stabbed when the victim tried to resist the robbery.
The situation is worsened by the availability of stolen firearms and ammunition, much of which was looted from police stations during the recent mass uprising. According to police sources, many of these weapons remain unaccounted for.
Addressing this crisis requires a multi-faceted approach. Improved detection of criminal activities, stronger collaboration between the police and communities, and effective deployment of security forces are essential to reducing these threats.
The growing rate of crime demands immediate action from the entire security apparatus. Public safety must be prioritised to restore confidence and ensure peace in society.
