Community library in localities

August 05, 2023 00:00:00

The library in a neighbourhood or locality is now a rare thing. Though some of the localities in Dhaka have libraries, their uses are limited. Residents in some areas do not even know that the library exists. Local authorities do not feel the urge to keep the libraries open regularly. Only libraries under private management in some neighbourhoods are well functioning. Most of these libraries were established some time ago. There was a time when almost every mahalla or locality had a library. Residents used to come to the library regularly to read books and newspapers. They also borrow books. Children usually attend various library-centric activities like quiz competitions. A library was also a meeting place. Elderly and retired people could spend hours together there. But no longer. The proliferation of the internet and smartphones is to blame. There are other sources of entertainment also. A drop in reading habits also makes people library-averse. So, it is now necessary to revive the library culture. It requires establishing community libraries in every locality.
