Counterfeit goods — a threat to RMG sector

Bangladesh's textile industry, a cornerstone of its economy, is facing a growing threat from counterfeit and substandard imported goods. Despite being the world's second-largest garment exporter, local manufacturers are struggling against the influx of fake branded clothing and imitation fabrics, which undermine their businesses and damage the country's global reputation.
A study published in January 2023 revealed that major international fashion brands, including Zara, H&M, and GAP, have been accused of exploitative practices such as paying suppliers below production costs. These predatory tactics exacerbate the vulnerability of local manufacturers, making it even harder for them to compete against counterfeit goods flooding the market.
Adding to the concern, the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has identified Bangladesh as one of the top five countries exporting counterfeit apparel. In a 2023 meeting, the USTR urged Bangladesh to take immediate action to curb the export of fake garments, underscoring the severity of the problem.
While Bangladesh's garment exports reached nearly $47.39 billion in 2023, registering a 10 per cent growth from the previous year, the unchecked rise of counterfeit goods threatens this progress. If left unaddressed, this issue could lead to job losses, declining investor confidence, and long-term damage to the industry's credibility. As global consumers become increasingly discerning, the presence of fake products undermines the hard-earned trust in Bangladesh's textile sector.
To safeguard the sector, the government must strengthen border controls, impose stricter penalties on counterfeit operations, and launch awareness campaigns to educate consumers on the value of supporting authentic local products. A proactive approach will help ensure the continued growth and global standing of Bangladesh's textile industry.
