Dhaka city has a number of open manholes. Those are not just manholes. They can also be called death traps for the city dwellers. Pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists often become the victims of such death traps. We see people talking on mobile phones or listening to music on earphones while walking along or crossing the roads. They run the risk of falling in these manholes.
The city corporations should take prompt measures to cover the open manholes and the law enforcement agencies should take steps to arrest the thieves who steal manhole covers. A few organised gangs are now operating in the city to steal the manhole covers and sell those in the black market. And once these thieves are behind bars, the problem of manhole-cover could be addressed.
